It’s all about black lace, mesh bodysuits and dancers in their underwear. In short, this is one sexy show.
From the opening bars of All That Jazz I guarantee you’ll have goosebumps and no matter how many times you’ve seen it on the West End or watched the film, it’s no less enjoyable.
Of the 4 lead roles (Roxy, Velma, Billy Flynn & Mama Morton), 3 were played by ex soap stars and I must say, the theatre actress playing Velma Kelly outshone them all by miles – although Jessie Wallace as Mama Morton was the best of the three.
The choreography is amazing and it’s got Bob Fosse written all through it like a stick of rock – it’s a story of sex and jazz and liquor and debauchery and it’s showcased perfectly through the dancing.
The musical Chicago is based on a play of the same name by reporter and playwright Maurine Dallas Watkins, who was assigned to cover the 1924 trials of accused murderers Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune. In the early 1920s, Chicago’s press and public became riveted by the subject of homicides committed by women. Several high-profile cases arose, which generally involved women killing their lovers or husbands. These cases were tried against a backdrop of changing views of women in the Jazz age, and a long string of acquittals by Cook County juries of women murderesses (jurors at the time were all men, and convicted murderers generally faced death by hanging). This is a show you have to see AT LEAST once in your life, so do yourself a favour and get to the Empire this week.
