Ruby Wax is to headline the inaugural Liverpool Science Festival.

Wax will be performing her Sane New World stage show at the new Titanic Hotel Liverpool, Stanley Dock on Saturday 28 June.

Since her Masters Degree in cognitive therapy from Oxford University, Ruby has become a respected campaigner for mental illness in the UK.

Liverpool Science Festival bridges science, art and culture with a diverse programme for all ages and audiences.

Appearing on the same night as Ruby will also be Dr Lyn Evans, chief engineer at CERN, birthplace of the internet. He spent 15 years leading the team constructing the Large Hadron Collider, the most complex machine ever built.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Solar System is an ambitious public engagement project setting off from the source of the Mersey on a journey to the sea, culminating in a series of pop-up astronomy events and happenings which will mark out the positions of the planets and a scale model of the Solar System. The journey begins on June 25 with astronomy at the source of the Mersey and ends on the evening of July 9 on Crosby Beach.

Wynn Abbott, founder director of Liverpool Science Festival, said: “After several years running a successful science festival in London, I’m excited to be back in Liverpool to launch this new science festival, in the city where I was a student of science at the University of Liverpool. Liverpool is one of the most interesting and exciting cities in the World – high on talent, creativity, individuality and innovation.

There will also be a screening of Particle Fever, the new film about the hunt for the Higgs Boson, three months ahead of its general release. The screening will be followed by a Q&A featuring Professor Tara Shears, CERN particle physicist and the University of Liverpool’s first female professor of physics.

The festival runs from June 25 – July 9. For details see liverpoolsciencefestival.com

Liverpool Science Festival is part of the science programme of events during the International Festival of Business (IFB 2014).
