Finding a good friend is rare, finding a good waxer is even rarer. I wrote a blog last year on what really goes on during an intimate waxing session (basically a load of compromising positions and a hella good gossip session) and now my waxing artiste has moved on to pastures new and opened her own specialist waxing shop and godammit you all need to know. Baldy bits are not something to take chances with. Here’s an excerpt from last years blog explaining a bit about what Michelle does:
With the annual trip abroad fast approaching its time to talk bikini line. Getting a bikini wax is not something a girl looks forward to, unfortunately it’s a necessary evil unless you want to spend your entire hard-earned holiday lying on the beach fretting over whether or not you look like you’re smuggling spiders in your bikini. To me shaving isn’t an option, it’s still prickly even straight after AND you’re just askin for a clitorectomy really.
I took the plunge a few years ago and went for my first ever Hollywood (all off), it was pretty painful and I called my mate afterwards cryin that the woman “touched me bumhole”. This wasn’t abuse apparently, it was normal.
I liked the results and I started getting them done regularly by the same girl and it did hurt a bit less each time I went but then one time I had to be seen by someone else; the pain was white hot an I ended up askin her to stop halfway through an went on holiday with a wonky fanny. Finding a good waxer is key.
I started going to see Michelle while she was working out of a city centre salon which is now a tea rooms. I had a proper laugh each time I went in. If it’s the first time you’ve ever been for a wax you might find someone faffing around with your bits while carryin on a full blown gossiping session with you a little bit uncomfortable BUT once you get your head around the fact she’s seen more fannies than Mario from TOWIE and in her words “it’s just the same as doin an eyebrow wax” you’ll be fine.
During the wax itself you’ll even get to practice yoga positions like these:
While she gets into all the nooks and crannies. I’m not going to lie, it does sting a bit but it’s over very quickly. Beauty is pain. Getting your extensions tightened hurts, getting your eyebrows tattooed hurts, breaking in a new pair of Kurt Geigers hurts but we do it because the end result is worth it.
Once you start getting it done every 4-6 weeks it gradually begins to hurt less as the hairs grow back thinner. My top tip is don’t go and get it done the week before you’re due on, wait til the week after you’ve finished, that’s when your pain receptors are least sensitive.
Michelle has been trained to specialise in Hollywood and Brazilians in a salon on Bondi Beach (not a bit jel, honest). Aussies lead the way in waxing for standard and hygiene, i suppose it’s apt that those from down under would be experts on down under.
Michelle uses hot wax (wax applied straight to the skin which then hardens and is pulled straight off), a pre waxing oil is applied to the skin first so that it’s just the hair getting ripped out and not your skin – meaning less pain. Most salons in the UK use strip waxing which is too harsh on intimate areas plus dipping the spatula used on your bits back into the wax pot can pass on hair, skin and blood which is hardly the most hygenic thing.
When she came home from Australia the plan was to open a specialised waxing salon that followed the Aussie way and set herself apart from other salons. She says: “I only use lycon wax which is Australian and the best in the business. I don’t double dip on intimate areas and wont apply wax without pre oil. Clients love me for my speed. No one wants a Hollywood wax thats last an hour. Clients don’t have to feel embarrassed as I’ve seen it all before a million times over. I also specialise in pregnancy waxing. At a time ladies are swollen and self conscious down there its good for them to go to someone who again has waxed a million heavily pregnant women and uses products that will keep it as pain free as possible. I’m really reasonably priced charging 18.50 for Brazilian and 22.50 for Hollywood (this is actually boss btw, Harvey Nichs charge about £50 for the same treatment). I also offer acrylic nails, Opi gel nails, Honey I shrunk inch loss wrap, eye treatments, Sienna x spray tan and a 250 watt sunbed.
